Also, I might add that I attended an Episcopal boarding school for five years. We had compulsory chapel three or four times a week and our headmaster was an Episcopal priest. But I do not recall ever seeing the Ten Commandments in a classroom.
My colleague Rex Smith, the former editor of the Times Union in Albany (and a minister's son) has a terrific piece on the history behind this controversy. Rex kindly removed the paywall for this piece on his Substack platform, which he calls "The Upstate American." https://www.upstateamerican.com/p/ten-commandments-are-not-schoolwork
As you note, the new law is clearly a gambit by the GOP to force the issue all the way to SCOTUS where it could very well receive a favorable ruling — just as the case of the praying football coach did two years ago. That case inspired me to write an op-ed in which I predicted we’d soon see a court-approved Intelligent Design curriculum in public schools. Given the current state of affairs, I stand by my prediction.
Thanks Barth. I would highly recommend that op-ed. The idea that intelligent design would be taught in a science classroom is preposterous. As you know, real scientific theory and conclusions are subject to peer review and if new evidence emerges, scientists are typically open to revising their conclusions. Those who adhere to intelligent design are unshakeable in their beliefs and will not revise them because their beliefs are based on faith.
Hi Terry - As a Christian, I think Jesus did a major edit on the Law. He cut it from ten to two. Love God and Love your Neighbor. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. And, as ADD seems to be a problem these days, maybe we should just post these two. Ten is a lot to memorize. If they are memorized, it might not be such a bad thing!
Have a good solstice and full moon week end - gasp - pagan concepts - but this is the Berkshires where the ancient gods still dwell. lol.
Thanks Susan. Nice to hear from you. Yah, I'm not sure what relevance warnings against graven images or coveting your neighbor's house has even for devout Christians. Like most things religious, it's a cafeteria. Take what you find appetizing. Hope all is well up in Egremont!

Uh oh. It's contagious! ... "Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says Texas should have been first to put Ten Commandments in public schools" https://www.expressnews.com/politics/texas/article/texas-ten-commandments-schools-19525665.php

Well written Terry! Looking forward to teachers explaining the fact that Moses was indeed Hebrew. That should go over well in Louisiana.
Hi Nick. This is to say nothing of Jesus himself!
