Most high-profile politicians are cynical. But Stefanik sets a very high bar for the aspiring cynics among us.

I agree with what you say , but there is one other thought that should be added to the end of McArdle’s comment of political expedience: the money line. Follow billionaire Ackman , one of the Harvard donors, whose wife has been caught in some plagiarism as well at Tufts, but he dismissed what she did as human error. I think there soon will be more to come on that front.

Hi Carolyn, Oh yes, I did mention donors and that definitely was an important piece of the puzzle. As you and I both know from our careers in independent schools, donor money talks and bullshit walks. From what I had read about l'affaire Ackman, his wife properly cited the sources but neglected to insert proper quotation marks-- a far lesser offense than Gay's. But Business Insider published a second story exposing "instances of Oxman's alleged plagiarism ... [that] appear similar to those launched against Gay." This brings to mind that old saw: "We have met the enemy and it is us." https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/07/business/neri-oxman-bill-ackman-mit/index.html

Agreed! I’m watching the Tufts case with great interest. Apparently Akman has found more to complain about among members of the Tufts faculty! Money surely does talk in our world!

Also, the fact that Ackman is friends with Elon Musk leaves a bad taste. We are judged by the company we keep, no?
